Marsh Street Skate Park
Elysian Valley

YOUTH HAVE A DREAM- Now That's RAD!

Joel Jimenez
recently got promoted to full-time status as the Marsh Skate Park Supervisor. Joel, who has lived in the neighborhood his whole life, has been looking forward to the opening of the skate park which was much needed for the kids in this area. Ever since it’s grand opening in September 2007, Joel has been skating there daily and later hired to supervise the park."Skateboarding Saved My Life!" Joel feels incredibly privileged to be doing what he loves, and has been a great mentor with the kids who skate there. Together, they are working on fundraiser ideas in order to install additional equipment to further improve the skate park. Joel and Tsilah Burman, Executive Director of the Los Angeles Neighborhood Land Trust (LANLT) tells us how they facilitate the creation of small, accessible community green and open space, such as parks and gardens, to address the inequity of open spaces in Los Angeles’ underserved neighborhoods, and to ensure community participation and collaboration in every step of the process of creating these parks and community gardens. Joel tells us why skateboarding saved his life and gives us the low-down on some skateboarding lingo. http://www.lanlt.org/

Empowering Youth to Cool the Earth
Alec Loorz was the keynote speaker for the Environmental Youth Conference! He founded Kids vs Global Warming when he was 12 years old after watching Al Gore’s movie, “an inconvenient truth.” Feeling the weight of the global situation and a sense that he could make a difference, Alec felt compelled to tell other kids about the problems we are facing. His message is deeply rooted in hope, encouraging kids to speak up and let their voices be heard on this issue.http://www.kids-vs-global-warming.com/Home.html

Leslie K. Gray Triumvirate Pi Theatre (Tri-Pi Theatre)

"The Pink Dress" was developed by Leslie K. Gray and is inspired by the story of her mother, who was falsely incarcerated along with thousands of Japanese Americans by the U.S. government during the war. Utilizing puppets created by Beth Peterson, modeled after the famed Bunraku puppets of Japan, "The Pink Dress" provides an accessible understanding of the dilemma of this group of Americans who were forced from their homes and businesses to live in the harsh conditions of a desolate prison camp.
